Yes, you read that correctly. When it comes to your health – always ‘GO’ before you ‘Get Set’ because your health cannot wait. Many of us wait too long to ‘start’ a healthy lifestyle regimen until everything is perfect in our lives, which means it usually never happens because our lives are so busy and hectic. Or, when we finally decide to start, we may already have disease, or we set up too many obstacles to have it succeed. Instead, we need to ‘start’ the race to a healthy lifestyle – eating healthy, being more physically active, and/or developing stress management techniques and not wait (or ‘get set’) until we have the perfect conditions or ‘aim’.

How many of us wait until New Years’ day to start the year off with a full blown healthy lifestyle resolution? Unfortunately, this mindset is not healthy, because it causes us to keep putting off what we need NOW! Worse yet, most New Year’s resolutions fail because they are too difficult to follow and maintain, and even more difficult to achieve, because they are so complex and strict.

A much healthier mindset is to start simple, by adopting one healthy lifestyle immediately, even if it means starting with just one small change at a time. In other words, accept that you need to make a change, then act on it immediately regardless how small a lifestyle change it is. There is no need to ‘get set’ when it comes to your health, just ‘GO’ and start the race to a new healthy lifestyle whenever you are ready. When it comes to your health, each little change will help…

Here’s an example: let’s say you want to lose weight to improve your health and need to ‘start’ eating healthier but the thought of taking on a healthy diet is too overwhelming and you don’t know how to ‘get set’ so you never ‘start’ the race. The better solution is to make one small change, NOW!

Here are 4 ‘GO’ to strategies to choose from, that are excellent starting points for your race to optimal health:

  1. Stop drinking all sugar-sweetened beverages such as soda, lemonade, energy drinks, teas and juices.
  2. Eat breakfast that includes a healthy serving of lean protein (see my breakfast recipe below).
  3. Take 5! Eat 3 servings of fresh vegetables and 2 servings of fruit a day.
  4. Drink 6-8 cups of water, throughout the day by sipping 1/3 – ½ cup at a time.

Making one of these simple, small changes now is so much better than waiting to have a detailed and complete overhaul of your diet. Each month moving forward, I will provide you with easy-to-do lifestyle strategies to help you lose weight, get fit, and achieve optimal health!
